The 2004 DACS ARP Formula 3 Championship
season was the first for SK Racing.
Racing with a Dallara F3-97 and taking on established teams and drivers
Shanes season got of to the best possible start at Mallory Park. After
two aborted starts Shane fought his way from 7th on the grid to take the
race win ahead of reigning champion Richard Marsh.
The next two races provided the anticipated baptism of fire, a high speed
puncture at Oulton Park and an errant corner marker at Castle Combe prevented
Shane from building on his initial success. The two races at Silverstone
saw a return to form, with Shane taking a 4th and a 3rd place finish.
A trip to Spa Franchorchamps in Belgium failed to return a result, when
a battery failure forced Shane to retire. Back in the UK and at Brands
Hatch, Shane returned to the podium with a 3rd place.
Two races at Snetterton in changeable conditions allowed the team to employ
an adventurous tyre strategy which allowed Shane to finish twice on the
podium with two 3rd places.
Two more podium finishes followed on return trips to Oulton Park and Snetterton,
putting Shane back in with a chance of a top 3 championship finish.
The final round at Donington Park saw Shane take his first pole position
in a drying qualifying session. Clutch problems in torrential rain at
the start saw Shane drop to the back of the field. When the race was aborted
after six laps Shane had fought his way back to 4th! This secured 2nd
place in the championship in SK Racings first season.
