Shane Kelly - 2002 Season - British Formula 3 & Formula Renault UK
2002 began with more F3 testing for the newly established Team Park Formula 3 Team, Team Park were mindful of Shane’s performances during pre-season testing in 2001 and asked him to shake down their brand new cars at the Valencia circuit in Spain. This opportunity gave Shane the chance to perform on a Formula 1 test track, used just the day before by Ferrari and under the noses of the Astromega Formula 3000 team.

Unfortunately, a lack of available sponsorship funding meant that Shane was unable to progress to the British Formula 3 Championship with Team Park.

Still optimistic of an opportunity to showcase his talents in 2002, Shane’s hopes were answered when the HillSpeed team invited Shane to test their new 2001 Dallara Formula 3 car at Silverstone, on the pre race test day for the British Grand Prix support race.

Despite impressing in his testing appearances during the year Shane was unable to fund a race drive, until the end of the season presented an opportunity to race in the Formula Renault Winter Series with local team Jensen Motorsport.

This race allowed Shane to familiarise himself with Formula Renault cars and also confirmed to him the importance of a drivers technical knowledge and the fundamentals of setting up a race car. He also impressed the top teams with his versitilty in swapping categories, and he was invited to test for top team Eurotek.
