Shane Kelly - 2001 Season - British Formula 3 & ARP Formula 3
Shane’s efforts and good results during his two seasons of Formula Ford racing drew him to the attention of British Formula 3 Scholarship Class Champion team Fred Goddard Racing, who had won the Championship in 2000 with Gary Paffett.

Shane and his loyal sponsor ISC Distribution negotiated a race deal with Goddard for the 2001 Scholarship season, using their ex-Enrique Bernoldi Dallara F3-98. Shane was teamed up with top race engineer Roger Parks and began an intensive pre-season of testing which took them to Silverstone, Croft, Donington Park, Oulton Park and Snetterton as well as Nogaro in France. Shane often headed the Scholarship time sheets and had the better of his team mate Robert Doornbos.
As the first race approached everything looked promising for a successful season, however with one week to go before the season opener Goddard decided to hand Shane’s car to Robbie Kerr, who had been testing for a rival team during the pre-season and bought with him a bigger budget.

Left devastated on the sidelines, Shane had contemplate that it was his development work that gave Kerr a competitive car and he went on to win the Scholarship Championship with it in 2001.

Undeterred, Shane and ISC regrouped and went racing again in 2001, firstly in the Monoposto Championship with a Formula Vauxhall at Brands Hatch. After heading the times in testing and qualifying, Shane was taken out of the lead of the race by his own team mate as he attempted to lap him!

After his impressive drive at Brands Hatch, Shane was invited by the HillSpeed team to drive their second Dallara F3-97 in the ARP Formula 3 Championship races at Donington Park and Brands Hatch. HillSpeed had already won all but one race of the year so far with their lead driver Luke Stevens. He wasn’t to have everything his own way at Donington, Shane qualified on pole position for both races and proceeded to win the first race in the rain, followed by the second race in bright sunshine! At Brands Hatch Shane convincingly took pole position and made a storming start to lead at the first corner. He was unable to finish the race though as he ran out of road at the Druids hairpin and had to retire with a damaged car.
